Private Tour Description
Explore the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, buried after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., in a unique tour to the discovery of the uses and customs of the ancient romans.
Pick up directly from your hotel or the indicated meeting point, where we’ll leave for Pompeii, the first stop in our tour, arriving after about 30 minutes.
Today Pompeii holds an intense fascination for visitors since, following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the year 79 A.D., it laid buried and forgotten for hundreds of years.
The town is among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the excavations, which began in the 18th century, are still being carried out today.
Our guide will take you slowly through some of the ancient streets of Pompeii where you will see Baths, Forums and Villas built by the prosperous Romans in the year 80 B.C. and marvel at the fabulously preserved Frescos which adorn the walls and floors of the villas.
When the catastrophe of 79 A.D. occurred, Herculaneum was submerged under a torrent of mud and lava that hardened into a soft tufa (a kind of course rock) that preserved many of the timber features and household objects, which can still be seen today. A large portion of treasures lies buried under the rock, to the extent that some families are being rehoused so works can continue.
The archaeological site of Herculaneum, together with that of Pompeii and Oplontis, have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1997.
We will return to Sorrento in the afternoon.
